SniffNotes Fragrance Rating System
When I evaluate a fragrance, I rely on my 30+ years of experience in fragrance development to provide an honest, thorough assessment. My rating system breaks down how a product's scent performs across multiple factors, from its initial impression to how it evolves over time.
Whether you're a brand looking for insights or a consumer curious about the scents in everyday products, I hope my evaluations give you a better understanding of what makes each fragrance unique. Here’s how I approach fragrance ratings and what each category means.
1. Scent Strength
Scent strength measures how noticeable and powerful a fragrance is during and after use. Some scents are meant to be subtle and comforting, while others are designed to make a bold statement. I rate strength based on how well a fragrance achieves its intended impact without being overwhelming.
1/5: Extremely subtle; the fragrance is barely detectable.
2/5: Mild, faint fragrance, noticeable only when close.
3/5: Moderate strength; noticeable but not overpowering.
4/5: Strong fragrance that lingers and can be detected at a distance.
5/5: Very potent; fills the space and remains noticeable long after use.
2. Scent Complexity
A well-crafted fragrance has depth and evolves over time. I assess how the fragrance notes (top, middle, and base) interact to create a multidimensional scent. Complexity is important because it keeps a fragrance interesting and enjoyable throughout its wear.
1/5: Simple, one-dimensional scent with no transitions.
2/5: Limited complexity, focusing on one primary note.
3/5: Moderate complexity, with some layering and evolution over time.
4/5: Rich, well-balanced scent with clear, harmonious transitions.
5/5: Highly complex and nuanced, with distinct changes between top, middle, and base notes.
3. Longevity
Longevity measures how long a fragrance lasts on fabrics, skin, or surfaces after use. This is an important factor for both brands and consumers, as it determines whether the scent delivers lasting value.
1/5: Fades almost immediately after use.
2/5: Lingers for a short time, but dissipates within a few hours.
3/5: Lasts throughout the day but may fade slightly.
4/5: Remains noticeable for an extended period, possibly up to several days.
5/5: Extremely long-lasting, detectable even after multiple days or uses.
4. Scent Evolution
A good fragrance should evolve as it’s worn or used. I evaluate how the scent transitions from its initial impression (top notes) to its deeper base notes. A well-evolving scent keeps the experience interesting and enjoyable.
1/5: Little to no evolution; the scent remains static.
2/5: Minimal development, with slight changes over time.
3/5: Clear transitions between top and base notes, though subtle.
4/5: Noticeable development as the scent evolves through distinct stages.
5/5: Rich, dynamic evolution with clear changes between top, middle, and base notes.
5. Freshness
Freshness refers to how clean and invigorating a scent feels, especially for products like detergents, soaps, and softeners. This is a key factor for many household and personal care products.
1/5: Dull, flat scent with little freshness.
2/5: Slightly fresh, but lacks vibrancy.
3/5: Moderately fresh and clean; pleasant but not invigorating.
4/5: Very fresh and clean, providing a crisp, refreshing experience.
5/5: Extremely fresh, evoking a revitalizing, bright sensation.
6. Comfort (Wearability)
Comfort assesses how wearable or pleasant a fragrance is for extended periods. Some fragrances, while strong, can feel overwhelming or uncomfortable, while others remain enjoyable all day long.
1/5: Overpowering or unpleasant for prolonged exposure.
2/5: Tolerable, but may be too strong for long-term use.
3/5: Comfortable for most people, though some may find it intense.
4/5: Very comfortable and suitable for prolonged exposure.
5/5: Exceptionally comfortable, perfect for extended wear in fabrics or on skin.
7. Uniqueness
Uniqueness evaluates how distinct a fragrance is compared to other similar products. In a crowded market, standing out is important for a scent to make a lasting impression.
1/5: Commonplace, smells like many other products in the category.
2/5: Somewhat unique, but still reminiscent of familiar scents.
3/5: Moderately unique, with some distinctive qualities.
4/5: Quite unique, offering a refreshing or unexpected scent.
5/5: Highly distinctive, unlike any other similar product.
How I Use This Rating System
I apply this rating system across a wide range of products—from laundry detergents to personal care items—to ensure consistency and transparency. These ratings help both brands and consumers easily compare different fragrances and find the best fit for their needs.
Each product I review is scored on a 1 to 5 scale, with detailed explanations provided for each score. My goal is to give you clear, honest insights into how a fragrance performs, whether you’re looking for a long-lasting scent, a fresh and comforting experience, or something truly unique.
Why These Ratings Matter

While fragrance is always somewhat subjective, I aim to offer fair, balanced, and thoughtful evaluations to help you better understand the products you're using.
